prehistoric postcard
Thanks to all of you who left messages of concern, I appreciate your kindness. I'm feeling some better this week & even went out of the house after 9 days inside. Needed some stuff from the grocery store.
It seems that no matter how awful I feel, I can nearly always paint. My latest project was a postcard for an elementary school class who are collecting one from each of the 50 states. Since I couldn't get to a museum or other touristy place that sells postcards, I decided to make one. Dunkleosteous, a prehistorc shark that swam in Lake Erie in the Devonian Era seemed like the perfect ambassador from Cleveland, as fossils were found in the shale cliffs in the area and a model of the predator resides in a local nature center. I'd made many sketches of the model over the years, so had good reference material. You can't see all of the details in this photo, but I was pleased at the ferocious expression. I made special trip to the post office to ensure the postcard got safely on it's way & the class ought to receive it by Thursday. Even after millions of years, 'Dunk' is still swimming.

What a cool idea for a postcard!
Those kids will be thrilled!
Dunk is kind of cute!
I am sorry to hear you have been sick, it seems like when it rains it pours doesnt it? I like the new painting you did. I enjoy looking at your work--take care and feel better soon
Thank you for commenting, I seem to have forgotten this site entirely, and my writing has been building up. When I do post something lately, it seems to be some sort of list or song lyric. I am completing the finishing touches on some final papers, including an analysis of nature and religion in Irish history, and one on San Juan Island. Thank you for your comments, they always mean a lot, and every time I return to your page, I am stunned by your art. Artistically, I have certainly grown much since last semester, however, it is still a struggle to do anything more than a quick field sketch. Perhaps it is just because I have not yet practiced enough. Similarly, I need to stop saying I can't write poetry, I'm certain I can, people tell me that I write like a poet... I just need to try. My proudest drawings I've made so far are still a shrimp, an entoniscid, and a hemigrapsid crab from about two years ago. Perhaps I will scan them in at some point. To save space, I will say long days and pleasant nights to thee and be off.
I'm sorry to learn that you have been unwell but glad to know that you are better and well enough to go out. Hope your Dunkleosteous won't scare little Rufus!
Take good care of yourself!! xxx
I do hope the other side of the post card had a note about Dunk. I had of course not been aware of such. Among the many things of which I know little.
You are so clever.
Yep, the other side had a "greeting" from Dunk, which told a bit about him & even what he liked for lunch.
I imagine the Devonian sea that pepared the sediments of the future Hercynian mountains . 200 millions years ?
I am glad Jacky you are better . ake care of you . Spring sometime catches us wiith the brusque changes of temperature .

I am so happy that you got out of the house...9 days confinement is a long long time to be inside. How great that you can paint. Also it's very special to have a hand-painted postcard!
We've been to all the Great Lakes. Lake Erie is still my favorite. Perhaps because I spent so many memorable hours there. We spent time at Edgewater Park last September. It was so very beautiful.! The Lake was polluted for many years while we lived there.
Jacky here is a link that will interest you , I think : http://www.xanga.com/angi1972/586219561/item.html?nextdate=last
