  • Memorial Day

    Mem day floral

It's the beginning of Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. which is celebrated by bar-b-ques & picnics, big movie openings & great sales at many stores. But I hope that everyone takes at least a few minutes and remembers the reason for the holiday. It's to remember the people who have passed away, especially those men & women in the military who have died for their country.

  • new drawing

    rhino portrait

This is a drawing of a white rhino that I did for an online art show. It's done in Prismacolor pastel pencils on toned paper. I hadn't used Prismacolor much before this project, but really liked them, so I'm planning on doing more with this medium. The effect is much like regular pastels, only without all the chalk dust & there's no need for fixatives to keep the colors on the paper.

  • new book reviews

In my most recent book reviews for Vulpes Libris on WordPress.com, I got a bit personal. I usually just stick to the book itself without revealing a lot about myself, but our recent theme weeks demanded more emotion. Last week was "The Books That made Me", those that had a big impact on our lives and I chose "Jonathan Livingston Seagull", which you may remember from the 1970's.You can read about it here: Jonathan Livingston Seagull
This week is our Third Annual Poetry Week, which I organize each May. My selection was a recent collection of poems by Mary Oliver, which was also a tribute to the friend who introduced me to her work. It's at Evidence by Mary Oliver
If you read either of these posts, feel free to comment there or on here, I'd be pleased to read whatever you have to say. Thanks!

  • Happy 'Doption Day, Dora!

    at pet shop
It was 2 years ago today that I adopted Dora. This is a photo I took of her in the pet shop on the morning I brought her home. She's on the left, the smallest piglet they had. Those 2 brownish piggies were aggressive sisters & probably grew up to be ganster piggies.
I've given her lots of carrots today to celebrate, which pleased her, as carrots are her favorite food. She's actually a bit finicky when it comes to eating, but she always gets excited about carrots. I hope I have my silly little Dora for a long time to come.
